TYPES OF BEAM

  1. CANTILEVER BEAM

Cantilever beam is a member with one end projecting beyond the point of support, free to move in vertical plane under the influence of vertical loads placed between the free end and the support.

Eg; Street signs, airplane wings, shelves, fan blades and some bridges

  1. SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAM

Simply supported beam is one of the most simple structures. It features only two supports, one at each end. One is a pinned support and the other is a roller support. With this configuration, the beam is inhibited from any vertical movement at both ends whereas it is allowed to rotate freely.

  1. FIXED BEAM

A fixed beam is supported between two fixed ends. It is also called fixed end beam or built-in beam or restrained beam. It is classified as a statically intermediate beam, which involves more than three unknowns and the  determine the support reactions.

  1. PROPPED CANTELEVER BEAM

A cantilever beam whose one end is fixed and other end is provided with a simple support, in order to resist deflection is called propped cantilever beam.

  1. CONTINUOUS BEAM

A continuous beam is a beam that has more than two supports, is statically indeterminate. The reactions in the supports of a continuous beam cannot be obtained with the equations of static equilibrium only.

  1. OVER HANGING BEAM

If the end portion of a beam extends beyond the support, then the beam is known as overhanging beam. Overhanging may be on one of the supports or on both the sides.
