Junior Engineer (JE) Recruitment: A Comprehensive Guide

The railway recruitment board has released RRB JE Official Notification on 27 July 2024. The Junior Engineer (JE) position is a crucial role within the Indian Railways. Aspiring candidates can apply for this position through the RRB’s online application process. Let’s dive into the specifics:

RRB JE

Pay Level and Initial Pay

  • Pay Level in 7th CPC: Level 6
  • Initial Pay: ₹35,400

Age Criteria in Notification

  • Age (as of 01.01.2025): 18 to 36 years
  • Note: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there is a relaxation of 3 years beyond the prescribed age limit.

Total Vacancies

  • Total Vacancies (All RRBs): 7,346

Online Application Process

Create an Account:

  • During the online application, candidates will be prompted to create an account.
  • If you’ve already created an account for CENs notified in 2024, use the same credentials to log in and apply for this CEN.
  • If you haven’t created an account earlier, follow the steps to create one before proceeding with the application.

Account Creation Details:

  • Fill in the required details for account creation carefully.
  • Once the account is created, corrections won’t be permitted.
  • Pay special attention to your mobile number and email ID—they cannot be modified later.

Documents needed:

      • Passport size photograph:
        1. Recent, clear color passport size photograph against a plain white background.
        2. Format: JPEG image (size 30 to 70 KB).
        3. The photograph should not include dark glasses or a cap.
        4. Candidates should have at least 12 copies of the same photograph for future use during the recruitment process.
    • Signature:
        1. Scanned JPEG image of the candidate’s signature in running handwriting.
        2. Format: JPEG image (size 30 to 70 KB).
      • SC/ST Certificate (if applicable):
        1. Only for candidates requesting a free pass for train travel.
        2. Format: PDF (up to 500 KB).
    • PwBD Candidates:
        1. Upload a passport size photograph as per the specifications mentioned above (not the full-body photograph used in the disability certificate).
    • Scribe Details (Applicable to eligible PwBD candidates only):
      1. Provide details of the scribe.
      2. Upload the scribe’s passport size photograph (against a plain white background) in JPEG format (size 30 to 70 KB).
      3. The scribe should not wear dark glasses or a cap.
      4. Furnishing information about the scribe is mandatory.
      5. Note that changing the scribe at the exam venue is generally not permitted, except under exceptional circumstances (with reasons recorded and relevant details provided).

Application Submission and Modifications:

  • After submitting the online application (ensuring it’s complete), candidates can modify certain details.
  • You can change or correct any information except those filled in the ‘Create an Account’ form (including email ID and mobile number) and the chosen RRB.
  • To make modifications, pay a non-refundable modification fee of ₹250/- per occasion from 30.08.2024 to 08.09.2024.
  • Remember that details in the ‘Create an Account’ form and the chosen RRB cannot be changed after 08.09.2024.

Medical Standards

Let’s delve into the medical standards for candidates seeking appointment in the Indian Railways as per the RRB JE Official Notification. These standards are essential to ensure that individuals are fit to perform their duties effectively. Here are the key points:

General Physical Examination:

  • Candidates must be in good mental and bodily health, free from any physical defects that could hinder their job performance.
  • The correlation between age, height, and chest girth is considered during the examination.
  • For certain services, the minimum standards for height and chest girth are as follows:
    • Male candidates: Height of 152 cm and chest girth fully expanded at 84 cm.
    • Female candidates: Height of 150 cm and chest girth fully expanded at 79 cm.
  • Exceptions exist for specific ethnic groups with distinct average heights.

Visual Acuity Standard:

  • Visual acuity is crucial for Railway Service roles.
  • Candidates who have undergone LASIK surgery or other refractive error correction procedures are ineligible for posts requiring Medical Standards A3.

Ex-Servicemen:

  • Ex-Servicemen have different medical standards outlined in Para 534 of the Indian Railway Medical Manual (IRMM) Vol. I.

Stages of Recruitment:

1st Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-I)

  • Duration: 90 minutes (120 minutes for eligible PwBD candidates with a scribe).
  • Number of Questions: 100.
  • CBT-I is a screening test, and the questions align with educational standards and technical qualifications for the posts.
  • The normalized score from CBT-I is used for shortlisting candidates for the 2nd stage exam as per the RRB JE official notification.

Syllabus

  • Mathematics:
    • Number systems, BODMAS, Decimals, Fractions, LCM, HCF, Ratio, Percentages, Mensuration, Time and Work, Time and Distance, Simple and Compound Interest, Profit and Loss, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Elementary Statistics, Square Root, Age Calculations, Calendar & Clock, Pipes & Cistern.
  • General Intelligence and Reasoning:
    • Analogies, Alphabetical and Number Series, Coding and Decoding, Mathematical operations, Relationships, Syllogism, Jumbling, Venn Diagram, Data Interpretation, Conclusions, Decision Making, Similarities, Differences, Analytical reasoning, Classification, Directions, Statement – Arguments, Assumptions, etc.
  • General Awareness:
    • Current affairs, Indian geography, culture, history (including freedom struggle), Indian Polity, Constitution, Indian Economy, Environmental issues, Sports, Scientific and technological developments.
  • General Science:
    • Physics, Chemistry, and Life Sciences (up to 10th Standard CBSE syllabus).

Eligibility Criteria

  • Minimum percentage of marks for eligibility:
    UR: 40%
    EWS: 40%
    OBC: 30%
    SC: 30%
    ST: 25%
    Relaxation of 2% for PwBD candidates if there’s a shortage of PwBD candidates against reserved vacancies.

Shortlisting for 2nd Stage CBT:

  • Candidates are shortlisted based on normalized marks obtained in the 1st Stage CBT.
  • The total number of candidates shortlisted for the 2nd Stage is 15 times the community-wise total vacancy of notified posts.
  • Railways may adjust this limit as needed to ensure sufficient candidates for all posts.

2nd Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-II)

  • Duration: 120 minutes (160 minutes for eligible PwBD candidates with a scribe).
  • Number of Questions: 150.
  • The questions are objective type with multiple choices.
  • A virtual calculator will be available on the computer monitor during the 2nd Stage CBT.

Syllabus

  • General Awareness: Current affairs, Indian geography, culture, history (including freedom struggle), Indian Polity, Constitution, Indian Economy, environmental issues, sports, scientific and technological developments.
  • Physics and Chemistry: Up to 10th standard CBSE syllabus.
  • Basics of Computers and Applications: Covers computer architecture, input/output devices, storage devices, networking, operating systems (Windows, Unix, Linux), MS Office, data representation, internet, email, websites, web browsers, and computer viruses.
  • Basics of Environment and Pollution Control: Includes knowledge about environmental basics, pollution effects, control strategies, air/water/noise pollution, waste management, global warming, acid rain, and ozone depletion.
  • Technical Abilities: Questions related to educational qualifications specified for each post (refer to Annexure-A and Exam Groups in Annexure-VII).

  • UR: 40%
  • EWS: 40%
  • OBC: 30%
  • SC: 30%
  • ST: 25%
